GPYNEF recognizes the development of high school sailing as high priority, knowing that these young men and women represent the future of the sport.
In 2016, funding to enable school teams to travel to regional and national events has not only increased interest among students, it has also sharpened their skills, giving them the opportunity to compete with some of the country’s finest young sailors.
The Foundation, in partnership with the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, was also able to provide a “home” for high school sailing in the Spring and Fall. With the GPYC providing twenty-420-class sail boats for their use, five high schools used the Club as their base beginning in mid-March through June and again in the Fall.

The schools also hosted two Regattas at the Club, including the regional Mallory Regatta, which was a qualifier for the National Championships.
The Midwest Inter Scholastic Sailing Association’s Michigan state High School Championships were hosted at the GPYC this fall where Grosse Pointe South High School team captured the title for the third time in the past four years, defeating largest field yet to compete for this award. Fourteen high schools sailing teams, from throughout the state, competed in the regatta.
